30 questions about marketing that will help you boost your enquiries and sales
These are some of the marketing questions that I ask my clients – and my experience has been that if you are willing to spend a few minutes giving them serious thought – the results can be quite dramatic.
You should be aware that each question you answer ‘no’ to probably means that you are losing out on untapped profits. But the purpose of these questions is not to point out that you’re doing things wrong – it’s to motivate you to make marketing a top priority and to do it better. Have fun!
1. Do you have a marketing plan? If you do, when did you last look at it? 3. Can you name three things that set you apart from the competition (sometimes called Unique Selling Points)? 4. Do you know the difference between a feature and a benefit? If so, do you always promote benefits in all your marketing including letters, emails, website and advertising? 6. Have you tested Telemarketing to attract new customers? Did you accurately measure the results? 7. Have you tested PR to attract new customers? Did you accurately measure the results? 8. Do you use powerful direct response advertisements that compel the reader to contact you – or are they just mundane like all the competition? 9. How do you choose where you advertise and do you advertise in certain publications just because your competitors do? 10. Do you have a website? If you do, when was the last time it was updated or added to? 11. Have you tested pay per click (PPC) search engine advertising? Have you measured the results? 12. Do you understand how search engine optimisation (SEO) works to improve the ranking of your website on search engines? 13. Do you rent or purchase email and direct mailing lists to better target customers? 14. Do you understand the difference between using marketing to generate leads and generate sales? 15. Do you have an excellent lead generation process in place? 16. Do you always follow-up your enquiries and leads with phone calls, letters and emails? 17. Do you obtain and use testimonials from your best customers? 18. Do you have an excellent referrals system in place? 19. Are you aware of how many people visit your website, which pages they go to and how long they stay? 20. Do you collect the contact details of those who visit your website by offering them something of value in return? 21. Do you know how to write a press release to instantly grab the attention of the person reading it? 22. Do you know how to significantly improve the responses from your direct mail and email simply by looking at the written content? 24. Do you personalise your email and your direct mail? 25. Do you know which important information you should collect from your customers to boost the number of times they will buy from you? 26. Do you understand that the best way to sell is to ask questions? 27. Do you take amazing care of your current customers? 28. Do you know why it’s important to include a ‘PS’ in all of your sales letters? 29. Do you communicate by mail, email and telephone on a frequent basis to your current customers to ensure they know what you have to offer? 30. Do you use just one or two ways of marketing to promote your business? Do you know why you should be using between six and ten?
Bonus question - Do you realise that your competitors probably answered ‘no’ to even more questions than you did!
Now here’s a Free Tip. Pick just three of the above that are important to you and take some action today to improve those areas.
Print out this list and come back to the checklist in the weeks and months ahead. You can use it as a very good way of measuring your progress as you implement the marketing strategies that are going to make a difference.
