10 ways to make your Twitter content an effective marketing tool

Here are 10 subjects you can Tweet about that turns Twitter into a marketing tool for your business:

1. Case Studies
They're too long to put in your Tweet, but you can include a short link to the case study on your website.

2. An Insiders View
Your followers will be interested to know what's new in your business such as a new project, a new member of staff or a new client.

3. Events
When you attend and event or host your own let your followers know. If it's your own business event you can give them multiple reminders of when and where it will be held, and then a running commentary on the day. If you're attending an event give an honest appraisal of how useful it was to you.

4. Opinions
Twitter is a great tool for sharing your views on other news or information you have come across, with a link so others can share it too. Just be careful you slag off competitors or individuals. It may come back to haunt you!

5. Questions & Answers
You probably have clients asking you questions just about every day. Make a list of the most common and relevant questions you get asked and use your tweets to give succinct answers to them one-by-one. Use a link to your website FAQ's to provide further detail to your answers.

6. Factoids
If Steve Wright on BBC Radio 2 can do it, so can you! People love them, but make sure these short sharp facts or statistics give a relevant insight to your business, industry or the economy.

7. Introduce your other social media
Twitter should be integrated with other social media marketing tools you are using. Use your Tweets to take your followers to your Facebook, blog or LinkedIn pages where they can interact with you further.

8. Special Offers
Use your Tweets to announce special deals, discounts or other promotions.

9. Photos or images
As the saying goes, 'a picture paints a thousand words'. Well, in the case of Twitter it paints a lot more than 140 characters! Again, just make sure it's relevant.

10. Top Tips
These are always popular. Have a 'Tip of the Day', or 'Tip of the Week'. Make these informative  and solutions to potential problems your customers may have. This is also a great way to build your list of followers, eager for your next valuable tip.

Finally, a word about links in your Tweets. With only 140 characters you need to shorten the URL of your links as much as possible. This is best done using one of the URL shortner websites available such as bit.ly or tinyurl.
