SOLUTIONS FOR GROWING YOUR BUSINESS
Fresh Ideas to grow

Steps to an effective Search Engine Optimisation solution

Why a SEO solution is important

When you want to find information or look for a product or service, where would you look? Along with millions of people and businesses every day you probably go online and use a search engine. And in the UK that will almost certainly be Google. So if you want prospective and existing clients and customers to find your business you need to appear as high on search engine rankings as you can. Here are some tips towards achieving just that.

1. Website performance audit

Before your begin it’s worth finding out how your website currently performs on search engines. It’s a mistake to start work unless you have a clear picture of where you are now, because a change could make things worse without you knowing. Things you should find out include:

Where you website appears on search engines using the words you would expect people searching for you would use.

  • How many pages of your website have been indexed by the search engines.
  • How many incoming links you have to your website. Having incoming links from “relevant” sites is crucial for improving rankings.
  • How much traffic your website currently attracts. Get a free trial of a Web analytics package that shows your site’s unique visitors and referring search phrases. Crucially, you will be able to calculate the conversion of unique visitors to those interacting with you i.e. info requests, free trial, signing up to a newsletter, sending an email, ringing you etc.

2. Set objectives
Set clear goals for your search engine campaign. Without smart objectives, you will lack focus and feedback and be unclear about what you need to measure.

3. Plan your goals and time scales

This might seem dull, but it’s crucial. Without it, you have no structure to what you are doing and when you are going to do it. Even the most disciplined person would find this useful, as it breaks down all stages into manageable chunks.

4. Keyword / key phrase analysis and selection

Don’t miss this step out. You will need to use one of the tools available on the Internet to help you. Three of the most popular are Wordtracker, Google Adwords and Overture’s Suggestion Tool. This is a vital stage of your SEO campaign, so it’s important to get it right. Here are some golden rules:
  • Don’t simply choose the most popular keywords that generate the most searches.
  • Consider the competitiveness of each keyword. Trying to achieve rankings for words or phrases that have 10 million competing sites will be difficult, if not impossible.
  • Look for niche keywords that generate good impressions yet have relatively low numbers of competing sites.
  • Don’t rely on single keywords. Find a combination of words (key phrase) that get good search results.

5.Content is King
Without great content, and the more the better, all is lost. No matter how good your website looks, or how well it's optimised for search engines, if your content is not interesting or relevant, people won't stick around on your site and search engines won't index your site as being valuable to people making online searches. Note, that when it comes to the amount of relevant content, 10 short pages is better than 5 really long ones.

However, don’t try to simply cram your content with your keywords (keyword stuffing) as this is classed as spamming and may result in your site being dropped by the engine.

6. Make it search engine friendly

You need to encourage search engines to regularly index your website, known as crawling. To achieve this you need to look at several aspects of your website structure, including:

  • make sure title tags are written correctly and reflect the page content
  • make sure keyword and description tags are entered correctly ( although far less important than titles)
  • make sure the keyword density in the pages is between 3% - 7%

If you have submitted your site to search engines, but all your pages are still not indexed properly, then your site lacks the right structure to be indexed successfully.Things like too much use of Flash, javascript or frames could affect the navigation by spiders.

7. Link building

Maximizing the number of relevant sites that link to your site is very important as it establishes your site in the online marketplace that already exists for your industry.

A good link campaign involves:

Content strategy: Building content of value on your site that will attract other sites to link to you. Ask yourself, “Why would people link to me?”

Outbound linking: Including outbound links to other websites that your visitors will find valuable.

Inbound linking: Draw up a list of other relevant websites that you can request a link from.

Remember:
  • Do not use link farms, as they will do more harm than good.
  • Do not link to sites that provide no value to you or your website visitors.
  • Do not request links from websites that are not relevant.
  • Try to get inbound links from sites with a high PageRank ( a value Google gives to a webpage dependant on content, relevance, popularity) The Google Toolbar will help you find out the PageRank of other websites.

The benefits of link building are higher rankings, driving relevant traffic, brand building and appealing to your target market.

8. Get registered with Directories

Avoid automated submission tools that might save you time, but can result in delays, being ignored or even banned.

Getting registered with relevant online directories will increase how search engines view the relevance of your website and its content. The most important directory of all is the Open Directory Project, or DMOZ. However, you need to ensure that your DMOZ entry is in the correct category, and be aware that getting listed can take some time.

There are other valuable directories to consider, for example:
World Site Index - a searchable directory of websites organised by subject

9. Reporting and analysis

It’s important to measure where you are in relation to your objectives set at the start. At the very least you should be able to measure the following:

  • Search engine positions for your chosen keywords and key phrases across at least the main search engines i.e. Google, Yahoo!, Bing.
  • Web analytics that give you the vital statistic you need, including the number of unique visitors, the source of your web traffic, the pages they visit and how long they stay on your website.

There are many reporting tools available, some at no cost and quite often your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can provide this information.

10. Keep it up!

When it comes to really effective Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) there are two fundamental principles you need to appreciate:

1. SEO is not an overnight sensation. It takes time and effort. Don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise. We are often asked, 'How long will it take?' The answer is. 'It depends.' This may sound a bit of a cop out, but the reality is there are several variables that will determine how long it takes to see significant improvement in the ranking of a website on the major search engines. It is therefore important that you look at organic, or natural search engine optimisation as a long term strategy, not a short term fix.

2. There is no magic wand. Clients often say to me, ' I've been told that if I do such and such, my website ranking will shoot up.' If only it were so simple! In truth, there is no one single thing you can do in isolation that will dramatically improve your search engine ranking. However, there are essential things you should do that collectively can make a real difference.

The golden rules are:
  • Make link building an ongoing activity.
  • Continue to look at your web statistics at least monthly.
  • Search engines love new content so continue to update and create new relevant content.
  • Have your website reviewed for SEO on a regular basis - twice a year.
  • Continue to monitor, review, test, improve and add to your keywords and key phrases.
